Step-by-Step Aluminium Extrusion Plant & Machineries
1. Billet Casting & Preparation
The process begins with casting aluminium billets — solid cylindrical logs made from
pure aluminium or alloy blends.
Before extrusion, billets are pre-heated in a billet heater or furnace to a temperature
of around 400°C – 500°C.
This controlled heating ensures the metal becomes soft enough to be extruded, yet firm
enough to maintain its structure.
Proper temperature control is crucial — too hot may cause surface defects; too cold may
result in cracking.
2. Die Preparation & Preheating
While billets are heating, the extrusion die — a precision-engineered steel tool
containing the desired profile shape — is cleaned, inspected, and preheated (typically
around 450°C).
Preheating prevents thermal shock when the hot billet makes contact and helps ensure
smooth, uniform metal flow during extrusion.
Each die is manufactured with micron-level precision to achieve tight dimensional
tolerances in the final product.
3. Billet Loading & Extrusion
The heated billet is transferred to the extrusion press container.
A hydraulic ram pushes the billet through the die opening at high pressure — forcing the
aluminium to take the shape of the die cavity.
As the metal flows, it forms a continuous length of extruded profile with consistent
cross-section.
During this stage, lubrication and controlled pressure are critical to achieving smooth
surface finish and proper grain structure.
4. Quenching (Cooling)
Once the profile exits the die, it passes through a cooling zone (air or water quenching
system) to rapidly lower the temperature.
Proper quenching ensures mechanical strength, hardness, and dimensional stability of the
extruded section.
The type of quenching system (air mist, fan, or spray) depends on the alloy type and
desired mechanical properties.
5. Stretching
After quenching, the extruded profile may contain minor twists or distortions due to
uneven cooling.
A stretching machine gently pulls the profile to straighten it and relieve internal
stresses.
This step ensures that the profile is dimensionally accurate and free of deformation,
making it suitable for further processing.
6. Cutting to Length
Straightened profiles are then cut into required lengths using automatic saws.
This allows for easy handling, transport, and preparation for the next process (aging or
finishing).
Cutting precision directly affects yield and downstream efficiency.
7. Aging (Heat Treatment)
To enhance mechanical strength and hardness, profiles undergo artificial aging in
controlled furnaces (usually 170°C–200°C for several hours).
This heat treatment allows the alloy to precipitate hardening phases, improving
durability and machinability.

8. Surface Finishing (Optional)
Depending on the application, the extruded profiles may undergo:
Anodizing – for corrosion resistance and decorative finish
Powder coating – for uniform color and protection
Brushing or polishing – for high-end appearance
These finishing processes improve both aesthetic appeal and lifespan of the product.
9. Quality Inspection & Packing
Before dispatch, every profile is tested for dimensional accuracy, hardness, surface finish, and mechanical strength.
Defective or non-conforming pieces are rejected to maintain international quality standards.
Finally, profiles are wrapped and packaged carefully to prevent scratches or deformation during transport.
